Oman’s prestigious opera house is back for a new season, with one of the world’s most famed musical stars set to kick things off with a two-concert performance. Plácido Domingo will wow theatergoers at the Royal Opera House Muscat later this month, putting on a program of popular, Spanish operetta-like musical plays called zarzuelas. The pieces fuse together music, prose, and dance, and hold a special place in the Spanish tenor’s heart, after he spent his youth working in his parents’ zarzuela company.
Domingo’s Gala Zarzuela has been specially created for the Omani venue, and will incorporate an array of theatrical, high-energy flamenco dances, as well as romanzas sung by the performer himself. Dancers from Spain’s Compañía Antonio Gades company will jet in for the occasion, while Grammy-winning soprano Ana Maria Martinez and tenor arturo Chacón Cruz will also be performing with Domingo. The extravaganza will be conducted by Jordi Bernàcer, with music courtesy of the renowned Fondazione Arena di Verona orchestra.
This will mark the third Royal Opera House Muscat appearance for 77-year-old Domingo, and won’t be his last – the acclaimed tenor will be back in Oman next year to perform in La Traviata. During his stay in February 2019, the crossover artist will also conduct the Orchestra of Teatro Massimo di Palermo in a separate show. Coincidentally, Domingo also conducted a performance at the opera house’s inauguration in 2011, describing the venue as a “magnificent cultural gem”.
The star, who has garnered multiple Grammy Awards during his distinguished career, will present the Gala Zarzuela on September 6 September and Saturday 8 September at 7pm. Those wishing to book tickets can visit rohmuscat.org.om.
