It is a given that any women designer tends to look into her soul to fill her own closet. History has proved that fashion thrives on it. Read Victoria Beckham’s style evolution in fashion week bows.

So the grown-up collection that Victoria Beckham sent out was a reflection of herself, with streamlined outfits, but light fabrics, sweet colors, and sparkly shoes like sprinkling a touch of fairy dust on a demanding world.

“I feel that this is a very honest collection – it shows the many colors of femininity and proves that delicacy can mean strength,” said the designer, “I think the color palette speaks for itself: Play-Doh and sorbet colors, but it’s not too sweet and sickly. It’s something that’s very true and honest to me and the brand.”

The designer was referring to a streamlined collection with mild touches of playfulness, as in the check pattern that reminded her of graph paper from math lessons in childhood; or the glittering shoes that she has promised to downsize for her six-year-old daughter. As ever, Beckham family members were at the show to support her: husband David, who is showing his menswear range for British label Kent & Curwen in New York. Son Brooklyn was wearing a top of his father’s design, as he follows one of the current family routes: fashion and photography studies at New York’s Parsons School of Design.

So, what did Victoria bring to the new collection? It was a reflection of her subtly changing self that leans towards slightly longer hemlines, pretty colors, and a vision of a woman who has left girlhood behind.

But that does not mean a dull middle aged wardrobe. Not at all! The designer focused on lightness in fabric and in colors like turquoise, brick pink, rose and lilac. The styles were a blend of casual and formal, with blouses tucked into skirts or worn wider and hanging loose. Add a few fluttery ruffles and a watery moiré pattern on a satin skirt and this was a Spring 2018 collection of Beckham light.

Was there any major decision about a new look – such as a vote for dresses over separates? “I want to wear both to be completely honest,” said Victoria. “There is a real lightness in this collection, so taking moiré, this jacket and shirt is tucked into a skirt. Everything you see is very light, lots of layering. It’s for summer.”
