Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, have reportedly welcomed a new four-legged friend to their family. The royal couple’s new eight-month-old black cocker spaniel puppy was a gift from the duchess’s brother, James Middleton, who announced that his dog Luna had given birth to a litter of puppies on his Instagram.

According to The Mail on Sunday, two of the duke and duchess’s three children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, helped choose one of the puppies to bring home, before the death of their dog Lupo last year.

In November 2020, the couple announced the news of their beloved nine-year-old dog Lupo’s passing on the Kensington Royal Instagram account. “Very sadly last weekend our dear dog, Lupo, passed away,” they wrote. “He has been at the heart of our family for the past nine years and we will miss him so much.”

The duchess’s brother also shared a heartfelt note on his Instagram, saying, “Many people over the years have reached out to me about the pain of losing a dog and, for most, the loss of a dog is in almost every way comparable to the loss of a human loved one. The pain I felt from losing my first dog Tilly back in 2017 still hurts and on hearing the news about Lupo brought a wave of emotions flooding back.”

Lupo, also a cocker spaniel, had been a Christmas gift to the duke and duchess from the duchess’s parents in 2011, the year they got married. Lupo joined the couple in Wales, where Prince William was posted as an RAF pilot in Anglesey. Reportedly, the dog was very protective of Prince George and had a great rapport with Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. Lupo would often appear in family pictures, including official ones.
