Royals, they’re just like us. Whether you live for the ‘gram or prefer to stay away from social media apps, there’s no denying that maintaining an internet presence has become a way of life for millions across the globe. And for those in positions of power, Instagram has become a strong tool in connecting with the world and building relationships.

Keeping this in mind, the Japan royal family — the world’s oldest monarchy — officially launched its own Instagram page yesterday. According to reports, the account is being handled by the Imperial Household Agency, a government agency that takes care of the family’s affairs. In less than a day, the account has already shared 20 posts on its page, and garnered close to 500,000 followers! Talk about an entrance.

So far, the official account of the Japan royal family — whose handle is @kunaicho_jp — has shared never-seen-before images and videos Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako’s public appearances over the past three months. The very first post on the page showed the royal couple posing with their 22-year-old daughter, Princess Aiko, in celebration of New Year’s Day.

The intention of the page is to help the prestigious family shed its reclusive image, and help the Japanese public gain a better understanding of the family’s official duties. Instagram, of course, served as the perfect channel to accomplish this task, given its popularity not just in Japan, but all over the world. Given the fact that several other royal families — from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, to Jordan’s Queen Rania and King Abdullah II — have also successfully utilized the platform to share important messages, build strong bonds with well-wishers, and ultimately elevate their relevance and popularity globally, it’s safe to say that the new Instagram page can only mean good news for the Japan royal family. Below, a closer look at some of the account’s most liked posts so far.
