Kanye West has set the bar pretty high for wife Kim Kardashian West’s birthdays—remember last year, when he arranged a serenade surrounded by flowers?—but this year’s gift was a little more in line with their new shared spiritual philosophy.
To celebrate Kardashian West’s 39th birthday, West donated $1 million to charity in her name, spreading the money around to various prison reform organizations including Cut 50, the Buried Alive Project, the Equal Justice Initiative, and the Anti-Recidivism Coalition.

I got amazing gifts from my whole family and Kanye for me the most amazing bags. But he also donated $1 million to my favorite charities that work so hard on prison reform on my behalf from him and the kids. This makes my heart so happy! pic.twitter.com/chNkyPRQGW

“I got amazing gifts from my whole family and Kanye for me the most amazing bags,” Kardashian West said on Twitter. “But he also donated $1 million to my favorite charities that work so hard on prison reform on my behalf from him and the kids. This makes my heart so happy!”
All four of the organizations West donated to in his wife’s name work to initiate prison reform and create opportunities for formerly imprisoned people, which is in line with the West family’s recent interests. Kardashian West is working hard to establish herself as a prison reform activist, having met with the president to advocate for the pardoning of Alice Marie Johnson and studying in order to join the ranks of celebrities with law degrees.

Once known for their extravagant gifts to each other, from a hand-painted Birkin bag to a $750,000 Lamborghini Aventador, the couple now seem to be favoring a different approach; West also reportedly abandoned secular music in September, saying he would only make gospel music from here on out, making the anticipation for his forthcoming album high.
