Yesterday, it was announced that Peter Lindbergh, revered photographer, passed away on September 3, 2019, at the age of 74. Immediately, condolences and tributes starting pouring in from fans, creatives, and celebrities—including one from the Duchess of Sussex.
On her and Prince Harry’s official Instagram, the royals posted a slideshow. The first photograph was reposted from the photographer’s account, the second showed Lindbergh and the duchess embracing. “Honouring the life and work of photographer Peter Lindbergh,” the Sussex Royal caption read. “His work is revered globally for capturing the essence of a subject and promoting healthy ideals of beauty, eschewing photoshopping, and preferring natural beauty with minimal makeup.”
The duchess would know. She was both Lindbergh’s subject and collaborator. Most recently, he shot her guest-edited issue of British Vogue, capturing 15 women, including Jane Fonda, Yara Shahidi, Christy Turlington Burns, Greta Thunberg, and New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. “There is no other photographer she considered to bring this meaningful project to life,” the caption continued. The issue, it’s thought, will be one of Lindberg’s last published projects.
Back before she was the Duchess of Sussex, Lindbergh photographed Meghan Markle for the cover of Vanity Fair. During her interview, Markle exclaimed to the reporter about how happy she was to work with Peter because of his aforementioned affinity for unretouched photos: “I gave him a big hug and said, ‘I am so excited to work with you because I know we will finally be able to see my freckles!’” she recalled. She was right: on the cover, her freckled face was on full display.
The Instagram tribute ended with a simple sentence: “He will be deeply missed.” And, as the fashion world continues to share their stories of this kind, talented, and legendary man, it seems Markle speaks for many.
