On Sunday, Beyoncé released a trailer for Black Is King, her new visual album. Releasing on Disney Plus on July 31, the album features appearances by Jay-Z, Kelly Rowland, Pharrell Williams, Tina Knowles-Lawson, Lupita Nyong’o, Naomi Campbell, Adut Akech and Aweng Ade-Chuol.
The new project, which was written, directed, and executive produced by the mega-star, will be based on the music from the 2019 album The Lion King: The Gift. Beyoncé voiced Nala in the CGI remake of the Disney film and composed the companion album. Disney announced Black Is King in June, revealing the project would have “lush visuals that celebrate Black resilience and culture” and a message that “highlights the beauty of tradition and Black excellence.” The album is based on The Lion King: The Gift, the soundtrack for the classic Disney movie’s photorealistic remake that released last year. Beyoncé curated and executive produced the soundtrack, which featured her daughter Blue Ivy Carter, Jay-Z, Childish Gambino, Pharrell Williams, Kendrick Lamar, Tierra Whack, 070 Shake, Jessie Reyez, and other artists.
The trailer borrows imagery from The Lion King, and Disney fans will recognize quotes from the movie in several scenes. The dynamic and colorful cinematography also replicate Beyoncé’s Spirit music video from the movie’s soundtrack. According to the released statement, the visual album was filmed in multiple cities including New York, Los Angeles, South Africa, West Africa, London, and Belgium. Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o makes a brief appearance in the trailer too, along with big names like Jay-Z, Pharrell Williams, Naomi Campbell, Kelly Rowland, Beyoncé’s mom Tina Knowles-Lawson and other talented artists. Directors Emmanuel Adjei, Blitz Bazawule, Pierre Debusschere, Jenn Nkiru, Ibra Ake, Dikayl Rimmasch, Jake Nava and Kwasi Fordjour contributed to the visual album, which was produced by Parkwood Entertainment and Walt Disney Pictures.
