To mark a season of celebrations for the 10th anniversary of Vogue India, Mario Testino has taken up the mantle of guest editor and photographed its May issue cover girl, Kendall Jenner, at Samode Palace, Jaipur. This is the first time Testino has done a fashion shoot in India. “Different elements of India have influenced my world and, in turn, this issue. It’s the people, the art, the colours, the elephants, and everything in-between,” Testino says.
The camera maestro is selling a limited run of 500 prints from the shoot to support local charity Girl Rising India. The chosen shot features Jenner in Samode Palace, with each print hand-numbered and sold online. Priya Tanna, editor of Vogue India, says: “With more than 100 pages of pure art, this collaboration has been so incredible that the May issue of Vogue India is undoubtedly a collector’s special.” If this is just the ignition for the Indian edition of the magazine’s anniversary celebrations, we expect a crescendo to come for Fall issues.
Jenner is a seasoned Vogue cover girl, appearing with models Imaan Hammam, Gigi Hadid, Ashley Graham and others on the March 2016 issue of American Vogue for the 125 years of Vogue celebrations; not to mention numerous international covers from China to France. The Vogue India issue goes on sale on May 4 and explores Bollywood heroes and heroines, including Katrina Kaif and Sushant Singh Rajput, alongside six fashion stories blending regional and global design and modeling talent. Testino also collaborated with Indian artists Thukral & Tagra and Mithu Sen to form a cultural celebration of high fashion and art with the compass point turned to India.
