We have witnessed some stellar moments over the month of fashion weeks. From the countless stunning physical catwalk shows, and innovative digital presentations, this year’s fashion weeks have been unforgettable. However, throughout all the change and challenges faced in light of the coronavirus pandemic, Paris fashion week still got to see Vivienne Westwood grace the catwalk, albeit virtually, three years after her runway debut.

The eccentric British retired designer no longer designs the clothes for her namesake brand, after handing over creative control to her husband Andreas Kronthaler in 2016. However, she was still very much the star of the Vivienne Westwood digital presentation at Paris fashion week, modeling several of the looks for the Spring/Summer 2021 collection. The digital show provided an intense look into Kronthaler’s new collection. Kronthaler, who shot the entire collection on his iPhone from his home in London, has taken inspiration from his wife and muse Westwood where it seems almost poetic that she was to model certain looks herself. “I do like dressing her up – she was a bit like a doll,” Kronthaler, told British Vogue. “It has been very challenging, but it was a good summer because I still have my Vivienne.” Speaking on the Spring/Summer 2021 collection, Kronthaler expressed his desire to “make things uncomplicated, unfussy, clear, and clean,” as that is what he finds most important at this time. Westwood herself was one of four individuals chosen by Kronthaler to model the collection, and although the casting was small there was no doubt that anyone could steal the limelight from the former fashion designer.

At 79 years old, Westwood is one of the older models to be featured in a catwalk. However, along with the fashion industry championing diversity and representation with the introduction of plus-sized models to the catwalk, Westwood is also a part of a pioneering movement welcoming older stars to the runways. 57-year-old actor Demi Moore was recently included in Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty Vol. 2 fashion show, alongside model Bella Hadid. Moore was one of the celebrities who filmed a cameo appearance at the highly anticipated show, which is streaming exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. Moore’s appearance was brief but breathtaking, as the 57-year-old oozed body confidence. In an industry that values youth among beauty and looks, how refreshing it is to see powerful, older women like Westwood and Moore grace the runway.
