Following the launch of Van Cleef & Arpels’ Midnight Planétarium watch in 2014, the luxury French maison presents the newest iteration of the timepiece: the Lady Arpels Planétarium Poetic Complications watch. The new watch, which was created in collaboration with Dutch watchmaker Christiaan van der Klaauw, was unveiled at the annual Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie Genève (SIHH) in January.
While Van Cleef & Arpels’ first astrologically inspired creation focused on six planets, the new timepiece celebrates three. Now available in 18kt white gold case set with diamonds, it shows the real-time positions of Earth, Mercury, and Venus around the sun, as well as the position of the moon around the Earth. Our planet is depicted as a turquoise stone, Mercury is in mother-of-pearl, Venus in green enamel, and the moon in a brilliant-cut diamond. Featuring a blue alligator strap, the US $245,000 watch puts the solar system on your wrist, and displays the time by way of a shooting star in rhodium-plated gold that moves around the dial.
The back of the watch is equally as striking as the front. It features a crescent moon made out of dazzling diamonds adjacent to an Earth in brilliant blue turquoise, framed by ornamental stones. Two apertures display the day, month, and year.
Other standout pieces from the Poetic Complications collection are the Midnight Zodiac Lumineux watches, a collection of 12 limited-edition timepieces that play on the Western zodiac. Sculpted in white gold, each star sign stands out against the backdrop of midnight-blue glitter, which are sure to strike a chord with women looking for a timepiece that is out of this world.
