The second edition of the annual El Gouna Film Festival (GFF) came to a triumphant close on Friday night. The week-long cinematic event saw Singaporean filmmaker Yeo Siew Hua’s A Land Imagined scoop up the Golden Star, the festival’s top feature-film competition prize. The accolade was awarded by a jury headed by the Oscar-winning producer of No Man’s Land, Cedomir Kolar. Meanwhile, A.B. Shawky’s debut Yomeddine (which made a splash in Cannes) took home the award for Best Arab Narrative Feature, as well the Cinema for Humanity audience award alongside Polish-Spanish co-production Another Day Of Life.
The closing ceremony drew in both international and regional stars, including Sylvester Stallone who was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award, as well as Owen Wilson, Patrick Dempsey, and Clive Owen. On the red carpet, famous Arab stars Dorra Zarrouk, Yasmine Sabri, and Yousra all successfully delivered scene-stealing red carpet looks. Stepping out at the Abu Tig Marina, Zarrouk chose a sequin-drenched Georges Hobeika gown for the closing ceremony — she also wore a creation by the Lebanese designer for the opening ceremony on September 20. Meanwhile, Kuwaiti couturier Yousef Aljasmi, who was responsible for Sabri’s sparkling, canary-colored opening ceremony dress, also created the heavily embellished, body-hugging design she sported on Friday night. As usual, Amina Khalil didn’t disappoint with her sartorial choices, choosing a by-appointment Norine Farah Couture dress for the occasion.
