Syrian Designer Nabil El-Nayal Has Been Awarded This Prestigious Grant

His collections have won him a legion of esteemed fans, such as Karl Lagerfeld and Nicolas Ghesquière, and now Nabil El-Nayal has been further recognized for his talents.

The UK-based designer, who was born and raised in Syria until moving to London aged 14, is one of eight creatives awarded this year’s BFC Fashion Trust by the British Fashion Council. The charitable initiative has dished out grants totaling £380,000 (SAR/AED 1.8 million) between the recipients, who were chosen for their exceptional efforts.

The BFC took the areas of e-commerce, sustainability, production and wholesale expansion into account when selecting those who would receive finding, the council revealed in a statement.

It is the first time El-Nayal, who has twice been nominated for a CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America/Vogue Fashion Fund Award) for his artistic Elizabethan-inspired sportswear label, has been a recipient of the annual BFC grant.

Other first-time beneficiaries include Aries and Teija, while previous recipients Marques’ Almeida, Mother of Pearl, palmer//harding, Rejina Pyo, and Sharon Wauchob will continue to receive grants.

All those awarded grants will also receive a structured mentoring program with advice and training given by HSBC, Google, Taylor Wessing, and Livia Firth’s Eco-Age. Since its inception in 2011, the BFC Fashion Trust has awarded more than £2 million (SAR/AED 9.8 million) to 42 British-based designers and design businesses.
