On the biggest day of London Fashion Week, JW Anderson’s fall/winter 2020 collection was unveiled in front of an audience that had quite literally been blown into Yeomanry House, as Storm Dennis continued to make his presence felt across Britain. Which begs the question: why wait to try next season’s styling tricks when spring feels so very far away?
The collection was punctuated with playful touches: dustings of lemon yellow; fluffy, tiger print shoes that peeped from beneath cuffed trousers; flat pumps embellished with diamanté ankle straps. Here, eight styling tricks from JW Anderson’s autumn/winter show.
Offset tailoring with a balloon-shaped bag
JW Anderson paired tailoring with accessories inspired by speedball boxing bags. Leave structured holdalls at home and take the spherical shape to work.
Black and brown look fresh together
If the last time you wore black and brown together was as part of a scratchy school uniform, it’s time to revisit the combination. Texture makes all the difference, as does the ratio – make brown the supporting act to black’s leading role.
Add flats to formalwear
Far chicer than a stiletto, Anderson teamed eveningwear with sumptuous scarlet pumps. If you have a wedding to attend before the seasons change, hop over puddles with ease in a luxe slipper.
Reconsider a voluminous dropped waist
The prospect of encasing yourself in a sky-blue feathered cocoon might feel intimidating, but wouldn’t it also be fun? Unnecessary but undeniably fabulous, plenty of voluminous dropped-waists swished down the runway.
Give ankle-tie trousers a bejewelled upgrade
Ankle-tie trousers have been going viral on Instagram for a while, and given the torrential rain in London, there’s never been a better time to try the trend. JW Anderson’s glittering autumn/winter 2020 upgrade is one we can happily get on board with for early spring evenings.
Layer fluff and sequins for evening
Why choose between fluff and sequins when you could plump for both? Anderson paired dazzling metallics with light-as-air collars comprised of glistening, spooling threads.
Tiger print is the new leopard print
A splash of animal print always perks up a winter wardrobe. JW Anderson’s autumn/winter 2020 creature of choice? The tiger. Fluffy slippers that peeped from beneath all-black ensembles were enough to add a little daytime drama.
Lemon yellow lifts everything
What could be more alluring than Kaia Gerber’s impossibly glossy hair? The lemon yellow pumps on her feet, which gave an instant lift to the otherwise dark tones in Anderson’s seasonal edit. With winter apparel still very much on the agenda for the next few weeks, don’t wait to wear this uplifting shade.
