Let’s talk about ‘twinning’. The urban dictionary has pinned down the term as simply, “A take on the popular term ‘winning,’ it refers to identical thoughts or behavior, as well as to brilliance.” In reality, ‘style twinning’ is one of the most potent moves two stars can partake in. It gets cameras clicking and ups the ante on every photo. What’s more, it can be a family affair. The front row at Milan Fashion Week for the Fall 2018 season are working it. Vogue.me investigates the fashion phenomenon.

The spontaneous formula for twinning goes a little something like this… Take a popular trend, make it your own. Next, turn up to a fashion show, and find your best friend (or sister, as is the case for Saudi twins The Abduls and Palestinian duo Simi & Haze) has also tapped the same sartorial vibe. Now, walk somewhere photogenic (Try the Grand Palais des Champs-Élysées, near the Burj Khalifa, or in the courtyard at Somerset House) and just so happen upon fashion week’s finest street style photographers and there you have it, a moment of street style history is made.

Vogue Arabia’s street photographer Valentina Frugiuele doesn’t miss a future-classic shot. When she happened upon the US blogger du jour Aimee Song and Brazilian street style star Camila Coelho at NYFW Spring 2018, and Susie Bubble and friend at LFW Spring 2018, both duos mirrored the same hues and wintry wardrobe staples.

This is no new move. Current day case studies include: Bella and Gigi Hadid. From borrowing from each others enormous archive of eyewear (Roberi & Fraud sunglasses are the current label du jour for the Hadids) to matching lattice jeans by Made Gold, the sister act has a growing portfolio of twinning style. No less, Kaia Gerber (supermodel on the rise) and her mother, original super, Cindy Crawford have redefined red carpet chic. The mother/daughter pair attend fashion week parties in head-to-toe Balmain looks and opt for co-ordinating Co + Co (model Coco Rocha’s own brand) jumpsuits at home. Not only is it easy to keep the same style DNA in the family, it also proves to be next-level fun.
