During her tenure as the creative director for the Parisian maison, Chiuri has transformed the world’s most feminine fashion house into one of the most feminist. Her debut ready-to-wear collection for the luxury house featured T-shirts emblazoned with the text “We Should All Be Feminists” that took over Instagram feeds. Then for the designer’s second couture collection for the storied heritage house, Dior upped the ante on its feminist stance with a 73-piece Spring 2018 offering inspired by Leonor Fini, an Argentinian surrealist and a staunch feminist known for her depictions of powerful women.
With six collections to manage annually for Dior, Chiuri’s creativity is set alight on many avenues, most notably as the first female creative lead in the fashion house’s 70-year history. “It can’t only be about [Monsieur Dior]!” she exclaims. “In some ways, I see myself as a curator of the house,” the designer told US Vogue in an interview backstage at her Spring 2017 Christian Dior ready-to-wear debut.
