“I went into the fitting with Domenico and Stefano, just explaining how culturally we have to be slightly modestly dressed,” recounts Sheikha Dana Al Khalifa aka The Overdressed. The Vogue Arabia September issue It girl walked the Dolce & Gabbana Spring 2019 Ready-to-Wear show today in Milan. “They were all ears, asking me if I wanted to cover even more,” she continues, speaking of the floral dress she wore that was originally transparent but then fitted with a slip as per her request. “We had a wonderful conversation about cross-cultures. The fact that Domenico is from Sicily – he said a beautiful thing – ‘If you don’t know who you are, you have no identity, you are no one.’ He strongly believes that culture and a strong identity are imperative to who we are today.”
Vogue Arabia editor-in-chief Manuel Arnaut commented after the show, “It is a great moment of pride to see the region noticed at Milan Fashion Week, specifically at such an anticipated show as Dolce & Gabbana. Sheikha Al Khalifa, who we featured in our September issue, is an example of good taste and modernity, so personally, I was excited to see her on the runway alongside iconic names such as Carla Bruni and Monica Bellucci.” Notably, Sheikha Al Khalifa walked to the strains of “La Donna e Mobile” from the opera Rigoletto, and sung by the late, great tenor Luciano Pavarotti.
Two years ago the sheikha, who hails from Bahrain and lives with her young family in Saudi Arabia, attended the Italian label’s spring show, sparking a relationship which continued with her hosting an event at the D&G boutique in Forte dei Marmi, Italy, where she has holidayed for 30 years. “Walking today’s show felt like a natural progression,” she explained. Natural, being a clear theme for her look today. She explains that the designers wanted her to walk the runway looking and feeling like herself. The team decided on “Lauren Bacall waves” and clean makeup featuring eyeliner and a strong, red lip. “Every girl’s favorite,” muses Al Khalifa with a wink before disappearing into a Milanese street ahead of Domenico Dolce’s birthday celebration dinner tonight. She turns to offer a final thought, “I wish that people make him feel as special as he makes everyone around him feel. A true, humbled man; I wish him nothing but health and happiness.”
