Trust Selena Gomez to make a statement of her own at the 2023 MTV VMAs, which is known for seeing some of the most viral fashion moments in history. Walking the pink carpet at New Jersey’s Prudential Center last night, the singer embraced the beloved cut-out trend through her look, but with a spin. Instead of one or two edgy slits on the bodice or the back, Gomez’s dress was created entirely in sequined floral appliqués pieced together for a peek-a-boo skin detail. The look was custom-made by Oscar de la Renta in a fiery hue and is quickly taking over the internet. A bolder version of her red Bottega Veneta birthday mini, the gown also came with a halter neck and playful fringes—all made out of the same floral pieces in her dress.

Gomez’s stylist Erin Walsh paired the bespoke creation with a collection of petal-shaped diamond jewelry from Pasquale Bruni, as well as strappy Jimmy Choo heels in a matching red shade. A soft glam by the 31-year-old’s trusted makeup artist Hung Vanngo complemented the look, and consisted of a creamy nude pout, brown smoky eye, and brushed-up brows using products from Gromez’s brand Rare Beauty. She also wore her hair down in a sleek middle part courtesy of stylist Anh Co Tran, while a fresh set of metallic red nails by Tom Bachik rounded out her beauty look for the day.
This year’s VMAs were particularly special for the popstar, who took home the Best Afrobeats award for her song “Calm Down” with Rema. To celebrate at the after-party, Gomez switched to a mini dress in another saturated hue. She took to Instagram to share a mirror selfie of herself wearing a purple silk dress with a corseted bodice from Undone By Kate, paired with black pointed-toe heels by Versace.
Gomez’s appearance marks the first time the singer has won at the MTV VMAs in a decade. The artist, who recently released her long-await track, “Single Soon”, is also working on her third studio album.
