When news first spread through the fashion world that Selena Gomez and Coach had joined forces, one thing seemed certain – the collaboration wasn’t going to disappoint. “It’s always inspiring to see your clothes worn by someone you admire,” said Coach creative director Stuart Vevers. “I admired Selena Gomez’s point of view, her authentic attitude, and her philanthropic work. She’s a true Coach girl.” The brand’s Spring 2017 campaign starring Gomez was shot by photographer by Steven Meisel. Gomez was pictured in the back of a cab, dressed effortlessly an on-trend outfit. It served as a teaser for what was to come.
Gomez’s debut collection remains true to the spirit of Coach’s roots and captures the star’s can-do/will-do attitude, with “love yourself first” embossed in her handwriting on the bag (her personal motto, which she also has tattooed in Arabic). The new lineup of handbags includes the Selena Grace bag for Fall 2017 – available in Selena White, Selena Red, and Selena Black Cherry – along with the chichi Selena Heart, versatile Mini Skinny, and Wristlet. With tags bearing her signature and motto, this is clearly a very personal collection for Gomez and one that her devoted fans are sure to love.
Ahead of the collection’s September 10 Middle East launch, Gomez reveals the creative process behind her first Coach offering.
What makes this the ultimate bag for you?
“I’ve really learned to appreciate craftsmanship and the small details of a bag. I think the ultimate bag is something that goes with almost everything and you don’t have to even give a second thought to if it goes with your outfit.”
There are some very personal touches on the bag – can you tell us about the saying “Love yourself first”?
“I’ve spoken in the past about how important it is to be true and honest with yourself. I have spoken with my fans about the importance of taking care of yourself. I am so lucky to get to be creative in my life and work on a variety of projects. But it is very important to make time for yourself, listen to yourself, and be kind to yourself.”
The Coach X Selena Gomez collection is available in Coach Middle East boutiques from September 10 in the UAE and at the end of September in Kuwait.
