Between Sex and the City and And Just Like That, Sarah Jessica Parker can’t help but be forever associated with Carrie Bradshaw — her stylish, Manolo Blahnik-wearing character on the two hit series. But that doesn’t mean that the actor—who celebrated her 59th birthday this week — isn’t a fashion icon in her own right. Off-screen, Parker has cultivated a unique sense of style that still puts her in a fashion league of her own. And at 59, she remains at the top of her style game.

Recently, Parker’s red carpet arrivals have proven that the star can easily rival Carrie in looks that are super polished and sophisticated. Unlike Carrie’s penchant for risk-taking (remember when she wore a belt overtop a bare midriff?) Parker’s sensibility leans more classic and refined. At the New York City Ballet’s fall gala last year, Parker emerged in a black off-the-shoulder gown with a full tulle skirt—a piece that’s reminiscent of that famous Sex and the City opening sequence. Parker also sported mismatched satin heels by her own label, SJP Collection—a styling move that also nods back to Carrie, who herself loved contrasting heels.

There’s always a sense of playfulness to Parker’s looks; You can tell she’s someone who loves dressing up as a form of self-expression, but doesn’t take it too seriously. In her rule book, fashion should be fun. When she attended the Daily Front Row Fashion Media Awards last year, she hit the red carpet in a lilac lace dress with a pair of neon yellow SJP Collection pumps. The bold color combo totally worked.

As fun as Sarah Jessica Parker’s red carpet looks are, they’re often meaningful, too. Take her striking look at the 2022 Met Gala, which revolved around an American fashion theme: The star partnered with Christopher John Rogers on a full-skirted ball gown that paid homage to Elizabeth Hobbs Keckley, an unsung designer who made history as the first Black female fashion designer in the White House.

So, sure, Carrie Bradshaw may be forever associated with a serious penchant for style—but in our books, Parker is the real enduring fashion star here. And even better yet, her wardrobe only seems to be getting better every year. The big question is: What fabulous ensemble will she bust out for her milestone 60th birthday next year? Judging by her chic history on the step and repeats, we know one thing for certain: It’ll be good.
