There’s a chance that if the late singer/actor Abdel Halem Hafez was still alive, Guillaume Meilland, creative director of Salvatore Ferragamo, would have shook his hand and made him a muse of the house. Looks put together by the 1950s Egyptian icon were always an exciting mix of tasteful classics, rich fabrics, and smooth colors. His style was a getaway of historical looks and themes, which is what Salvatore Ferragamo’s Spring 2018 collection recalled.
The label, which is currently owned by the third generation of the Ferragamo family, presented a collection of traditional tailoring with unexpected details like cropped knitted sweaters, corduroy shorts, flared trousers, and chunky rubber-soled penny loafers. With a mash-up of old French Riviera and Italian modernism, the collection was a balancing act between cool elegance and masculinity. With that, it seems Meilland has stepped away from the brand’s classic signature – which is usually structured around tailoring and formalwear – and moved to a less “uptight” gentleman. Furthermore, the Spring offering included mustard yellow jackets, velvet Bermuda shorts, and lightweight blousons, shirts, and overcoats. In our mind, a look that channeled the song that made Abdel Halem so famous: “Zay El Hawa” (Like the Air).
