For her debut at Vogue Arabia’s annual celebration, the Indian superstar pulled out all the stops for her ensemble. Keeping in mind the theme of this year’s ball, ‘Mermaids of the Gulf’, Kapoor Khan sauntered onto the blue carpet dressed in a couture piece by one of India’s most revered designers, Sabyasachi Mukherjee. For the occasion, the designer, best known for his regal aesthetic and penchant for championing age-old Indian techniques, created an elegant aquamarine gown for the star that perfectly fell in line with the concept of the evening. Below, Mukherjee shares a closer look at his initial sketch for Kareena Kapoor Khan’s Ball of Arabia look.

Kareena Kapoor Khan’s Sabyasachi Mukherjee gown was made using hand-woven tweed

When Sabyasachi Mukherjee sets his mind on creating something, you can be sure the designer won’t skimp on a single detail. For Kareena Kapoor Khan, the designer opted for a simple, clean silhouette, but brought in that trademark Sabyasachi grandeur in novel ways. “While interpreting the fantastical theme, I was very clear that I wanted Kareena’s look to be minimal, modern and controlled,” he tells Vogue Arabia. “The maximalism came out in the fabrication and color of our hand-crafted tweed, and the opulent jewelry.”

So, the couturier crafted the Ball of Arabia gown in meticulously hand-woven silk floss and wool tweed that looked majestic without weighing the star down. The custom maximalist-minimalist ensemble was then embellished with intricate beading and sequin work to create a shimmering, water-like effect. To amplify its vibrant hue, the star was seen pairing her gown with a clutch in the very same fabric, topped off with Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s signature Bengal tiger motif. All the was left to complete the look was the perfect jewelry piece.

With its plunging neckline, Kapoor Khan’s aqua blue gown was the perfect candidate for a statement neckpiece. To get her ready for the Vogue Ball of Arabia, Sabyasachi Mukherjee completed her look with a creation from his own archives: the iconic Palm Avenue necklace from Sabyasachi High Jewellery.

Crafted in 18k gold with a whopping 126 carats of blue topaz, white sapphires and brilliant cut diamonds, the neckpiece stood out not just for its beautiful use of gemstones, but also for its interesting motifs — look closely and you’ll spot a black and gold palm tree, along with a roaring tiger head in the design.
