Rula Galayini’s Spring 2019 Collection is an Ode to Motherhood

Having just welcomed her first children, a set of fraternal twins named Leia and Jude, a mere couple of months ago, Rula Galayini‘s latest Spring 2019 offering is a visually striking exploration of becoming a mother for the first time. “Matrescence”— a term coined by anthropologist Dana Rafael, which refers to a woman’s psychological, emotional, and hormonal transition into motherhood— is perhaps the Lebanese accessories designer’s most deeply personal collection yet. Even the campaign images were photographed in Galayini’s home, where she spent the majority of her time working on the new collection while simultaneously tending to her new maternal role.

Following the brand’s last Fall 2018 offering, which was designed while she was pregnant with the twins, the new collection boasts geometric clutches and handbags punctuated with subtle hardware, vibrant colors such as hot pink and sapphire, and leather detailing. Each piece is symbolic: The “Verso” bag boasts a front flap that’s bent at the corners to reveal bursts of vibrant shades, symbolizing the transition from one phase of life to another; Meanwhile, the micro “Cocoon” bag evokes the delicacy and vulnerability of newborns and consequently the need to contain them.

Representing the innate maternal bond, another standout feature of the collection is the two-toned, intertwining clasp that’s meant to slip through your wrist like a cuff and which will no doubt find favor in the brand’s loyal client list that includes Hend Sabri, Ascia Akf, and Joelle Mardinian. “Contrary to the tendency of looking outwards for inspiration, this season was all about looking within,” explained Galayini to Vogue.me.

Those looking to get their hands on the Vogue/DDFC Fashion Prize alumni’s ultra-wearable pieces will be pleased to know that they’re stocked at a number of boutiques dotted across the region, including Robinsons and Galeries Lafayette in Dubai, Tryano in Abu Dhabi, Bloomingdales Kuwait, Harvey Nichols in Riyadh, Saks 5th Avenue in Bahrain, as well as online at Rulagalayini.com.
