Rick Owens is collaborating with German footwear brand Birkenstock. In hindsight, it’s something of a perfect match. Owens is renowned for making the strange beautiful while Birkenstock launched the “ugly” footwear craze, taking it past a trend and making it a wardrobe staple. The collab sees three classic styles including the Arizona (featured) embellished with long pony hairs, felt, or full-grain leather. They will be sold from March 16th, as part of Birkenstock’s traveling mobile pop-up, which will park outside the Rick Owens Los Angeles store on La Brea Avenue. Step inside, and you’ll also be able to shop Rick Owens clothing and furniture and other Birkenstocks styles.
The Rick Owens Birkenstock collab is the first solo designer adventure for Birkenstock. A long time coming considering how well-loved the brand is among the fashion industry. Last year, 10 Corso Como courted Birkenstock following the footwear brand’s partnership with Barneys New York. However Birkenstock doesn’t consider Owens “just a designer.” Its chief executive Olivier Reichert deems the brand’s vast reach makes this a collaboration with architecture, fashion, and design. Available for pre-order from March 1st and for purchase on Rick Owens and Birkenstock channels from March 15th.
