Taking androgyny and kicking it up a notch are Italian designers Riccardo Audisio and Yago Goicoechea, founders of Dubai-based womenswear brand Taller Marmo. The Fall 2017 collection pays homage to masculine silhouettes, exploring tailoring through the eyes of powerful feminist and activist women throughout the centuries. Think borrowing from the boys but styled by and channeled through some of the world’s most influential females of our times. See the collection in full here.
Chavela Vargas, the revolutionary Costa Rican singer, was the starting point for the collection. With friends such as Frida Kahlo and Tina Modotti, Vargas played a key role in the rise of South American feminism. Channeling this wild passion that consumed her, Taller Marmo created a selection of oversized outerwear to encapsulate the way she dressed; from a leather motorcycle jacket to a denim and aviator one, the pieces are ones Vargas wore throughout her life.
Another iconic singer that inspired the creative duo is Patti Smith. Her free-spirited attitude along with her androgynous sense of dressing were the perfect tools to create the powerful statement they were looking for this Fall 2017. And the star? A three-piece suit with an oversized double-breasted jacket, big lapels, and sterling silver buttons.
Bianca Jagger, Lauren Hutton, and Katharine Hepburn – these were the women who inspired the more feminine part of the collection. Androgyny took a twist here; a sophisticated one with more feminine details. From a silk organza maxi-sweatshirt wool trims to an antique rose and copper blouse with white poplin cuffs, these pieces were made for strong, smart, and ever-so-glamorous women, who want to (and will) take over the world.
Taller Marmo’s Fall 2017 collection is stocked at Bloomingdales Kuwait, The Modist, Blank in Riyadh and Curio in Washington DC and online.
