The trusted stripe has long been a style staple. Coco Chanel’s early confections of nautical chic often favored the effortless elegance of a Breton stripe, Jean Paul Gaultier continues to be inspired by the striped uniforms of sailors which serve as an emblem of his label, and American designer Tommy Hilfiger still pledges patriotic allegiance in his collections adorned with stars and stripes each season.
It’s no surprise then, that our favorite European royals have been known to don the tried-and-tested print on glamorous outings and VIP events. From Diana, Princess of Wales’s impeccable 1980s skirt suits, to Princess Alexandra of Hanover resplendent in Giambattista Valli haute couture at this year’s Rose Ball in Monaco, these sovereign superstars make a strong case for looking fine in straight lines.
