Resort 2019: Prada Tastes the Big Apple

Miuccia Prada has been extremely busy. After opening the biggest Prada flagship store in the world, in the Dubai Mall’s new extension, the designer brought her latest resort collection to New York. The stage for the show was the company’s office, an old piano factory bought by the Italian brand 15 years ago.

Being busy proves to have great results, and Mrs Prada is indisputably one of the most revered designers in the world, specially judging by the show’s front row that included contemporaries Marc Jacobs and Raf Simons, and well-healed stars such as Claire Danes, Lana Winters, and Lily Collins. Uma Thurman was also among the guests and dazzled with a Botticeliesque long hair do that made heads turn.

As the show started, the runway was taken by energetic models, wearing looks that seemed to pay homage to the swinging 60s and 70s topped with trapper hats. The decades were especially present in the geometric prints in striking suits, or in flirty dresses with brown and orange flower motifs perfect for Coachella. There were also leather belted miniskirts with ruffles on the side, reminding us of Brigitte Bardot in her glory days. Even the Prada logo got an unexpected revival, making an appearance in some of the pieces reinvented with a vintage Austin Powers font.

As usual for the brand, this resort collection was a masterclass in layering, a style that Mrs Prada dominates like no other. Covering the model’s legs, sports-inspired tights adorned with paillettes proved that the house is all about details. Some of the most exuberant pieces—decadent gold brocade pant and skirt suites—were also combined with turtlenecks so delicate they appeared to have the texture of butter.

Overall, the collection felt quintessentially Prada and quintessentially luxurious. The evidence: leather overcoats ready to make their way into the closets of the loyal clients of the brand such as Iranian design grand dame Nina Yashar, the founder of Nilufar galleries, also in attendance.

“This collection was a mix of fantasy and reality, and my interpretation of what women what to wear today. The silhouettes were small and fresh, and I mixed high and low,” concluded the designer after the show. Even away from the comfort of her hometown, it is fair to say that once again, Miuccia Prada veni, vidi, vici.
