Check Please: How the Runway Hit Refresh on Heritage Prints & Plaids

Bottega Veneta Fall 2016. Indigital.

Bottega Veneta Fall 2016. Indigital.

Bottega Veneta, Chanel, Prada, and Preen by Thornton Bregazzi blazed a new trail for heritage prints and plaids respectively throughout the Fall 2016 collections; taking the classic weaves and prints into a decidedly futureproof direction.

Vogue Arabia looks to the runway for a reboot on how to wear the look now.

The traditional woven cloths and printed woolens of 2016 conjure up references to the historical plaids from Scottish clans (from Anderson to Wallace), albeit without direct mimicry. Fashion’s favorite look regularly relies on tweeds, a play on plaid design, and checked co-ords. This season, rather than these patterns appearing on standard slim-line coats, or cropped jackets harkening back to the early ‘90s, the look was experimental. Perfect for the woman who likes classics with a twist.

For those wanting a more refined silhouette, Bottega Veneta Fall 2016 remained true to its feminine customer with long-line loosely tailored wool trousers (in plaids of unexpected color variety) teamed with zesty green knitted twin sets.

Karl Lagerfeld’s wintry Chanel offering also saw clashes of weaves emphasized in modest grays and popping pinks. The way to pull off such a juxtaposition is to keep the textures uniform.

Prada Fall 2016. Indigital.

Prada made a play for urban utilitarian cool with printed wool tights that clashed with militia plaid coats. Fully loaded leather accessories are optional.

Preen by Thornton Bregazzi explored clashing bold color contrasts in mossy green and primary red and black checkers on a voluminous swing coat.
