The launch of Gigi Hadid’s knitwear brand, Guest in Residence, was light on pullovers, and heavy on partywear. The model pack turned out to support the budding cashmere connoisseur at her L’Avenue event in Saks, New York, where the chat centred around fun colour combinations and “varsity funk” capsules.

Hadid herself was in full Gen-Z businesswoman mode. The twenty-something multi-hyphenate, who formulated the idea for her preppy-cool label while pregnant and nesting at her family’s Pennsylvania farm, wore a pale corset over a Barbie-pink shirt and white trousers, with other sugary accents by way of Miu Miu’s Wander bag and point-toe pumps. With her hair slicked back in a spiky bun and the standard stack of gold jewellery, Gigi looked polished, yet out there on the fashion front.

Sister Bella Hadid, the directional dresser of the family, showed up coordinating in monochrome separates with her boyfriend Marc Kalman. The keen vintage fan is enjoying a Sandy from Grease phase, with skin-tight black pedal-pushers and cute cardis, and amplified the look with pigtails. Innocent? Anything but, thanks to her signature micro shades and again the mismatching jewelry that’s become a prerequisite for new-gen style plates.

Emily Ratajkowski balanced the louche suit trouser trend with her love of crop tops, thanks to Miu Miu’s schoolgirlish looks, while Precious Lee also put her own twist on tailoring via a PVC mac and keyhole cardigan. The mood? Power women celebrating one of their own rising up the ranks away from the runway.

The biggest fan of Guest in Residence was not in attendance but tucked up in bed. Gigi’s two-year-old daughter Khai, who already picks out her own outfits, has strong opinions on her mother’s cheerful joggers, hoodies and tanks. “She’ll be our first intern,” Hadid told Vogue. For now, the designer has got plenty of star brand ambassadors rallying around her.
