Actor Jackie Cruz – Flaca in the hit Netflix show Orange is the New Black – popped into the Rami Kadi showroom at Le Meurice during couture week to see the Lebanese designer. She shared with Vogue Arabia that she was searching for a Rami Kadi dress to wear to the Platino Ibero-American Film Festival in Madrid on July 22, where she will be presenting.
“I want to be known as a designer who blends technology with couture,” said the designer. Speaking of his unconventional fabric choices, among them raffia and plastic, he added, “It’s couture for a woman who wants to take risks and be daring. She will be unique in my clothes.”
This Rami Kadi Fall 2017 Couture collection, “Sweet Chaos,” explores optical illusions through geometric lines in bright colors. Tulle and satin are contrasted with raffia, leather, and plastic. One skirt features a holographic print that comes to life when it catches the light, while a wedding dress includes a veil that departs from shoulder ruffles as opposed to a headpiece.
There are few things as delightful as listening to a woman recall a dress that served as a turning point in her life. In the video above, Cruz shares how she wore a Rami Kadi dress to the 2017 Vanity Fair Oscar party and that it was the first time she felt that she “belonged.” Sheathed in a white dress with ostrich feathers, she remembers Salma Hayek stopping her to comment on the dress’s beauty.
