She is on track to become the youngest self-made billionaire in history, and Kylie Jenner‘s social media feed could certainly help her attain that title. In fact, the youngest member of the Kardashian-Jenner clan has topped this year’s Instagram Rich List, with the 20-year-old able to charge an estimated US$1 million for a sponsored post.
Given their vast audience and reach online, celebrities have woven their endorsement deals, once peppered across magazines and TV commercials, into their social media platforms in recent years, and can command hefty fees in return. This year’s Rich List, curated by Instagram-scheduling tool Hopper HQ, ranks 20-year-old Jenner as the top earner on the platform, followed by Selena Gomez with US$800,000 a sponsored post, and footballer Cristiano Ronaldo in third with US$750,000. The list is crafted using Hopper’s internal data and data gathered by speaking to influencers, brands and marketing companies, WWD reports. The figures given are an estimation and just because a celebrity could charge that amount, doesn’t necessarily mean they do.
Jenner, who has 111 million followers on Instagram, was joined in the top 10 by several family members: Kim Kardashian took out fourth place with the potential to charge US$720,000, and Kendall Jenner was named No 10 with the ability to command US$500,000 per post. Beyoncé, actor Dwayne Johnson, singer Justin Bieber, and footballers Neymar da Silva Santos Junior and Lionel Messi rounded out the top 10.
The news comes just weeks after Jenner was revealed to be on track to become the youngest self-made billionaire, male or female, in history by Forbes magazine. According to the feature, the company Jenner founded less than three years ago, Kylie Cosmetics, of which she is the sole owner, has amassed more than US$630 million in sales. Currently worth US$900 million, her fortune, which includes proceeds from her TV show, endorsement deals, and after-tax dividends, is on track to hit the billion-dollar mark within the next year.
However, following news of the social media star, beauty mogul, and new mom’s fortune, many took to Twitter to claim Jenner had a family dynasty to build upon. While Jenner has not yet responded to criticism, elder sister Kim Kardashian West defended the mother-of-one, stating the whole family is “self-made”. “What, because we came from a family that has had success? To me, that doesn’t really make sense,” the star told Refinery29 earlier this month. “I know so many people like that [who] haven’t turned out to be as successful as Kylie. If anything, I’ve seen the complete opposite.”
The 37-year-old, who also made Forbes‘s list of the 60 Richest Self-Made Women, added that her siblings have never “depended on our parents for anything besides advice”. “That’s how I lived my life with my dad [Robert Kardashian]. He never gave me anything. We might have the opportunity, but I’ve seen it go the complete opposite way. Nobody works harder than my sisters and my mom,” she told the site.
