Balmain’s Olivier Rousteing was born to make partywear. His densely sequined, beaded and braided minis have become as integral to his glitzy universe as the Kardashian-Jenners and Hadids who inhabit it. Accordingly, the Frenchman has condensed some of his most fabulous pieces into a capsule collection for Mytheresa.com – just in time for the after-hours revelry that the coming festive season dictates.
The 10-piece edit comprises dresses, miniskirts, blazers and printed jersey that all hold a special place in Rousteing’s design portfolio. “There are always one or two specific pieces that stay with me – even years after I first showed them on the runway,” Rousteing tells Vogue of the trouble he had streamlining his selection for Mytheresa.com. “These are all looks which managed to last more than a single season, and which often inspired several distinct iterations.”
When deciding on the color palette – white-silver metallic tweed with gold accents – Rousteing and his team consulted the list of “key ingredients” they tick off during the conception stages of each collection. A Balmain garment must always pay homage to “the legacy of the historic house, the singular craftsmanship of the ateliers, the spirit of [Rousteing’s] generation and the liberating potential of music”.
The latter has always been entwined with fashion for Rousteing. “In the studio, the soundtrack is set at top volume and the beat, lyrics and messages work their way into our subconscious as we design,” he shares. “It’s no surprise that this collection looks to the classic tunes and infectiously joyful vibes of disco – the perfect playlist to the effervescence of the holiday season.”
Will Rousteing spend the holidays partying himself? “This is my time for escaping from the non-stop schedule I follow all year,” he explains. “I can finally relax, have some nice dinners with friends and head to Bordeaux, my hometown, to spend as many days as possible with my family.” It will be up to his Balmain army – his string of famous followers – to take his latest creations into the night, then. Expect to see the distinct silvery bouclé filtering down your Insta feed soon.
