Human rights attorney Amal Clooney (née Alamuddin) and her political activist and actor husband George Clooney have announced through the Clooney Foundation for Justice that they are working with non-profit organization, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) to take a stand against hate groups in America. The couple have donated US 1 million (AED/SAR 3,673,143) in the wake of violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, earlier this month that left one woman dead and 19 injured.“What happened in Charlottesville, and what is happening in communities across our country, demands our collective engagement to stand up to hate,” the Clooneys said in a statement.

The news comes shortly after the human rights activists and new parents— who welcomed twins Alexander and Ella in June— unveiled plans to help educate 3,000 Syrian refugee children in Lebanon via a US 2.25 million partnership with Google, HP and Unicef. In a statement on the foundation’s website, the couple writes: “Thousands of young Syrian refugees are at risk – the risk of never being a productive part of society. Formal education can help change that.” According to the UNHCR, about 200,000 children in Lebanon aren’t going to school after fleeing the war in neighboring Syria. “My own family left Lebanon when there was a war there, and I couldn’t have done any of the work I have done without having been able to have an education,” revealed Amal Clooney in an interview with USA Today. “We want to get every single out-of-school child in Lebanon an education.”

The Clooney Foundation for Justice, co-founded by the couple, was established in 2016 to “advance justice in courtrooms, communities and classrooms around the world” according to a mission statement on its website. “We are deeply grateful to the Clooney Foundation for standing with us at this critical moment in our country’s fight against hate,” added SPLC president Richard Cohen. Further details about the joint initiative are expected to be announced at a later date, the organization said.
