The trouser shapes of SS21

If 2020’s low-rise trouser reboot filled you with as much fear as midriff flossing, take a moment to sit quietly, grab a biscuit and appreciate one of the dominant trends to emerge from the spring/summer 2021 shows: baggy pants. So long abs! Next season’s trouser shape comes loose, louche and requires little in the way of planking.

On Chanel’s runway, hot-pink paper-bag trousers came with teeny-tiny quilted flap bags strung on chains and left swinging jauntily at models’ hips. At Balenciaga, boyfriend jeans cinched two-sizes-up shirting with thick belts (also an entry-point accessory at Louis Vuitton and Chloé). Over at Alberta Ferretti, wide-leg trews were balanced with bandeaus up top. Fendi’s suits were so loose the hemlines swished along the floor, and Loewe’s oversized tailoring billowed to Ziggy Stardust proportions. The looks make you wonder why you ever considered slim-fitting trousers in the first place. Never mind… leggings!

The baggy trouser trend dictates a more relaxed silhouette; one with billowing utility trenches and mannish blazers (layered up if you’re Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen) in soft palettes. Cognisant that customers are seeking indoor leisurewear, brands have doubled down on the comfortable and capacious. And boy, do those shapes look inviting.

Here, the labels inviting you to stride into spring/summer 2021 wearing wide-legged chinos that will have you singing Madness’s ska anthem “Baggy Trousers”. Maybe.
