Morocco’s Caftan Week is back once again to celebrate the rich art, history and heritage of the staple clothing
Morocco is renowned around the globe for being a hub of the arts — in all forms, honing unique craftsmanship and fashion. Traditional Moroccan fashion encompasses long flowing dresses and robes, along with the iconic kaftan.
Spanning decades, the kaftan is not only an emblem of Moroccan fashion, but of Arab heritage as a whole. Although there are several iterations of caftans/kaftans around the globe with their distinct styles, the Moroccan one is widely acclaimed for its unique beauty. Since June 5, 2022, the Moroccan kaftan has been officially listed in the intangible cultural heritage by Islamic world education, scientific and cultural organization (ICESCO).
According to the Encyclopaedia of Islam, the kaftan was first introduced into the Barbary states by the Ottomans after the Islamic period, and then eventually spread to parts of North Africa including Morocco in the 12th century, and remains a huge part of the culture to this day.
To continue highlighting the garment and its incredible importance, Caftan Week returns for another rendition on May 9 – 12 in Marrakech. For its 24th edition, the annual event will follow the theme, “Morocco, Land of the Caftan,” as an ode to Moroccan sartorial heritage. Participants will get a chance to experience, and divulge deeper into the history of the piece, and how it garnered the stature that it signifies. Guests will also get a chance to take part in masterclasses from several experts.
