Montblanc’s New Limited-Edition Pen is a Work of Art

Who said diamonds are for your décolletage or digits alone?  Montblanc’s latest high-artistry homage to Hannibal Barca – the Carthaginian military general – comes in the form of a sparkling fountain pen crafted out of diamonds and pavéd with blue sapphires. It’s topped off with a 6.03ct diamond crown to echo your engagement ring. The price tag? US $1.9 million dollars. Signing on the dotted line never looked so chic.

The pen features a superb elephant trunk clip; a nod to the elephants Barca rode to cross the Alps in 2,200 years ago. The trunk-shaped clip is set with stones while the accompanying elephant head is adorned with individually cut and hand-set gems, which required months of meticulous craftsmanship. As a quick lesson in ancient history of sorts, Hannibal’s epic route is engraved on the forepart of the pen, showing his journey route from Carthage to Rome. Its solid gold nib is decorated with a design representing the Carthaginian deity Baal’Hammon, and is adorned with two brilliant-cut diamonds. All of these qualities undoubtedly justify the price tag, because after all, diamonds are a girl’s best friend.

It isn’t the first time the German manufacturer of luxury writing instruments beloved by A-listers such as Hugh Jackman and Olivia Palermo paid homage to an icon. Other celebrated figures to get limited-edition fountain pens created exclusively in their honor include Grace Kelly (she actually had her own collection of Montblanc pens), Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Leonardo da Vinci, and more.
