Capes, Full Skirts and Sleek Suits: Here Are All the Modest Looks from Paris Couture Week

It’s been a week of swoon-worthy outfits on the Fall 2019 couture runways in Paris; highlights have included Virginie Viard’s couture debut for Chanel, optical illusions at Iris Van Herpen and a flourish of show-stopping outfits from Middle Eastern designers – but, there was also a series of chic modest-inspired looks that didn’t go unnoticed. Make way for modest couture.

From pastel toned suits at Armani Privé and Alexandre Vauthier to sustainably-made printed hijabs at Ronald van der Kemp, the fall couture shows put modesty in the spotlight once more. Tulle skirts, oversized bows, and floral 3D appliques brought extra-volume at Giambattista Valli, where layering was key to creating covered looks. Both Givenchy and Dior offered a variation on the cape; Dior went back to black with a gothic design and Givenchy went whimsical with feathers and fantasy. Chanel showcased ultra-feminine modesty through tweed skirt suits, full-length velvet dresses, and ruffled high-necks, and Elie Saab featured sequin-embellished structured jackets with power shoulders and tall collars.

The standout modest look of the season came from Clare Waight Keller for Givenchy; over-the-top, extravagant and full of drama, the mint and black colored feathered ball gown was worn model Kaia Gerber. Arguably an art form, the dress proved that couture can still be fabulous, especially with a modest touch.
