From Meryl Streep to Nadine Labaki—All the Modest Looks Spotted at Cannes Film Festival 2024

There was no shortage of modest looks at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, as stars took to the red carpet in beautiful demure outfits.

Recent years are proof enough that modest looks are as much part of the mainstream fashion industry as any other style of clothing. After gradually taking over red carpets in the region and beyond, modest fashion has made its way onto one of the world’s biggest sartorial playgrounds, the Cannes Film Festival. As the illustrious event marks its 77th year, stars took to the red carpet on the French Riviera showcasing a few of the best demure looks La Croisette has ever seen. While Cannes often witnesses modest looks on hijabi women—who can forget model Rawdah Mohamed’s show-stopping ‘Scorched Bride’ look by Robert Wun in 2023?—this year, the style was also favored by stars like Meryl Streep, Jane Fonda, and Aubrey Plaza.

Streep, who was honored with the Palm D’Or for Lifetime Achievement award this year, walked the red carpet in a white Dior couture dress. The minimalistic number followed a more playful but still modest one, which Streep sported for her first photocall at the festival. The look featured a white Michael Kors Collection pantsuit with sharp shoulders, and high-waisted trousers, paired with a blue-and-white striped button-up. In line with the festival’s unofficial high heels rule, Streep wore the Dior dress with white platforms, and the suit with metallic silver pumps. Fonda made an appearance on the opening day of the festival in a dramatic Elie Saab look, proving that a round-up of noteworthy modest looks would be incomplete without an Arab designer. The actor and activist wore a black, embellished jumpsuit by the Lebanese couturier, topped off with a printed coat by Forte_Forte.

From the region, Saudi entrepreneur Yara Alnamlah made her Cannes Film Festival debut in a bespoke black dress by Rami Kadi, while Diala Makki opted for a blush pink Rami Al Ali look, and jury member Nadine Labaki wore a black Jean Louis Sabaji dress with an embellished collar and sleeves.
