The Duchess of Sussex celebrated America’s July 4 holiday as a member of the royal family last week, her first since her wedding to Prince Harry. And on Thursday, at the Commonwealth Youth Challenge reception at Kensington Palace, the duchess sought to marry her American heritage with her new role in Brandon Maxwell‘s cheery sunflower-yellow sheath dress.

The streamlined dress is fast becoming a signature silhouette for the duchess, who has previously favored European or British labels. The body-skimming fit recalls the elegant simplicity of the Roland Mouret dress she wore ahead of her wedding, while the color broke the mould of her typically neutral palette. Accessories were kept simple with taupe suede Manolo Blahniks grounding the look and simple diamond stud Adina Reyter earrings.
