Rising designer Michael Halpern of Halpernstudio has fast forwarded to the upper echelons of the fashion world in just a few smart swoops. Halpern’s inaugural Fall 2016 womenswear collection, shown as part of the Central Saint Martins’ MA Fashion graduation show, was noted by Vogue editors as one to wear, not just to watch. Sarah Mower is a supporter (and customer) of the emerging designer, making a precise prediction that his MA collection would “get stylists dialling in.” The speculation became factual at last night’s British Fashion Awards.
Giovanna Engelbert (née Battaglia) took to the red carpet at the British Fashion Awards 2016 in a look from Halpernstudio’s debut collection. “Her team got in contact with us and it was really easy – she knew what she liked, she was so lovely,” Michael Halpern told Vogue Arabia.

“The look just clicked for her when she put it on. I didn’t know that she was going to get the extensions but she told me that Olivier [Schawalder] was coming from Paris to do her hair. We discussed that she was going to be a bit bare on makeup because [the juxtaposition] just really worked.”

The piece worn by Vogue editor Mower was custom-made, no doubt befitting of the clever blends of louche and high-wattage glamazon appeal––a distinct look that has already coined the brand’s DNA. The American designer is based in London and is currently preparing for an up-and-coming show date in February during London Fashion Week. With his celebrated graduate Masters collection under his belt, the future dazzles (with rainbow sequins) for Halpern.
