“My collection is not limited by boundaries and rejects conformity,” says Mashael Al Rajhi to Vogue Arabia on her eponymous brand’s Spring 2017 collection. The eclectic attitude of the Saudi designer’s latest offering plays on voluminous shapes through Edwardian-sleeved shirts and a gathered, asymmetric, bubble skirt paired with a red lapel smoking jacket. Meanwhile, masculine undertones interpreted through mannish pinstripes and boxy cuts are offset by feminine accents like the bushels of ruffles that trace across hemlines, cuffs, and serve as a decorative element on the front of a loose-fit color-block dress.
The designer who was in the running for this year’s Woolmark Prize infused her predominantly black and white palette with flashes of royal blue and brick red combinations. The lineup riffs on today’s deconstructed aesthetic. To wit: an assemblage tailored white dress is bonded down the middle with a contrasting fan pleated pinstripe detail. Takeaways from the collection includes Al Rahjhi’s apron silhouettes and a tailored overlay featuring a billowing, sheer hem.
