As the face of Lady Dior, Marion Cotillard’s red carpet wardrobe has defined quintessential French style: effortless, easy glamour. But at Cannes 2017, Cotillard’s wardrobe took an unexpected departure from her classic look. Trading in her understated two-piece combos, the French actor blazed a directional trial in a capsule wardrobe of emerging and established brands.
At the opening photocall she took a turn on the red carpet in Y/Project, only to slip into a sequin jumpsuit by Michael Halpern for Chopard’s Trophy event, followed by an achingly cool band T-shirt by Belgian brand Filles à Papa, a lace skirt, and Fendi high-gloss thigh-high boots. The top is a nostalgic reverie of music icons of the 80s, with the slogan ‘Never Forget’ emblazoned underneath a montage of George Michael, Prince, David Bowie, and Michael Jackson. The T-shirt was an apt choice at the Cannes 70th anniversary photocall as it celebrated greats from the bygone era of pop culture.
The Halpern sequin number added to her tribute for the glam rock period. Coated in sequins and featuring a high-drama long train, Cotillard cut an edgy silhouette on the red carpet. The look harked back to Giovanna Engelbert’s Halpern red carpet moment at the British Fashion Awards 2016. Cotillard’s new look has moved toward championing niche brands mixed with edgy leading maisons, and it works. Copy/paste these combos into your wardrobe now.
