Meet The British-Syrian Designer Behind Gigi’s Favorite Outerwear

It may have only launched a little over a year ago, but Mariam Al-Sibai‘s eponymous label has already won over a horde of A-list fans. The British-born designer of Syrian descent, whose timelessly contemporary designs are easily recognizable for their simple modernity, has seen one particular piece find favor with the It-crowd in recent months, with Gigi Hadid showcasing her designs earlier this week.

The 23-year-old half-Palestinian supermodel was snapped in the designer’s Blanket Coat over the weekend, as she arrived home to New York after walking in Versace’s Pre-Fall 2019 Milan show. Cozily rugged up against the city’s brisk winter weather, Hadid wore the relaxed, chestnut-hued piece over co-ordinating grey loungewear, and white sneakers. “It feels really special to have Gigi in my coat, alhamdulillah,” the designer told Vogue.me. “It’s very surreal and definitely encourages me and motivates me to continue on designing and creating pieces that I love.”

The layering staple has also been sported by Quantico actor (and newlywed) Priyanka Chopra, who was snapped wearing the slouchy, wool-blend coat in New York back in October. Both Chopra and Hadid have been known to use celebrity stylist Mimi Cuttrell, who has clearly taken a shine to Al-Sibai’s line.

The designer, a graduate of LA’s Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising college, says she is honored to see such stars representing her brand, so soon after founding her namesake label. “I did not think that I would see Gigi Hadid or Priyanka Chopra in our coats having launched just over a year ago,” she reveals, adding that the two stars were women she had “dreamt of seeing in my pieces”. As for other A-listers that Al-Sibai would love to dress, Bella Hadid, Lauryn Hill, Maye Musk, Tracee Ellis Ross, Zoe Kravitz, Solange Knowles, and Pandora Sykes are all name-checked. “All of these iconic women have been impactful within their own professions and industries, with the style and grace that we hope to reflect in our brand,” she added.

The designer previously revealed to Vogue.me that her favorite season is fall, with “coats and jackets… an obsession of mine”. “They are the items I would invest in most,”Al-Sibai mused. “Quality outerwear is classic and long lasting. In winter, I dress simply but always make sure to wear a statement coat.” We can’t wait to see who will step out in her signature Blanket silhouette next.
