“We took fall and made it kitsch, and went from YouTube back to MTV,” Marc Jacobs told American Vogue hours after he scooped up the gong for CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year the night before. First unveiled in June, and available for purchase now, the Marc Jacobs Resort 2017 features an exclusive collaboration with MTV. Cashmere sweaters laden with the pop cult logo of the 24-hour music channel glisten in generous sequins, and make a play for bringing back Instagram appeal to the fashion house (something that Marc by Marc Jacobs did so well).
March 2015 saw the close of MBMJ—the diffusion line of the House of Marc Jacobs—after fourteen years in business. The show closed with a bow from womenswear design director Luella Bartley and creative director Katie Hillier after just three seasons of hashtag-worthy collections. While the appointment of Hillier and Bartley garnered reams of press coverage (cue the feminist ninjas from Fall 2015 that wore slogans such as “Solidarity” and “Unite” patchworked over William Morris prints), the design team has since moved on to launch a British brand in their namesake, Hillier Bartley.
The MTV collaboration seeks to bridge the gap between the elevated core brand and the void of fun that MJMB left in the industry. It also demonstrates that Jacobs has his finger on the pulse, and has acknowledged his millennial customer and her ardor for ‘90s nostalgia.
Vogue Arabia takes a look at three women who would wear these sequin-emblazoned tops so well:
Model Nora Attal’s penchant for the black choker trend, oversized black leather jackets, and double denim worn with retro band tees from the ‘90s makes her a perfect candidate for the Marc Jacobs MTV top.
Vogue cover girl Bella Hadid would find a way to make the oversized sweater urban-savvy with her impressive collection of premium leggings, chokers, and lace layering.
Rihanna is all about the subversive slogan top, and considering her ranking of 14 number ones on the Billboard charts and ample airtime on MTV internationally, the irony of wearing the MJ X MTV pieces wouldn’t be lost on RiRi.
