The Making of an IT Bag: Here’s How a Designer Handbag is Crafted

Smooth, silky-finish skins combined with crisp, geometric lines, slick functionality and smart construction – this is what makes an IT bag, according to Givenchy. First spotted on the Fall/Winter 2019 runway, the ‘Eden’ bag is Givenchy’s latest statement piece to carry into the new season.

Worn with sharp shouldered suits, sleek long coats and a series of floral plissé dresses, the new crop of bags are versatile in shape and in style. From the cross-body pouch in crocodile embossing to the elevated belt bag poised on a gold embellished chain, the runway showed the high-fashion accessory to be functional for both night and day. A mini variation completed by a slender, interchangeable leather strap reveals the handbag’s element of personalization – a utility that can fit with any mood or ensemble. But, of all the new bag’s signatures, it is the artistry that can be admired the most.

Although Givenchy’s Artistic Director, Clare Waight Keller, has developed a reputation for impeccable tailoring, the craftsmanship of her collection as a whole can be appreciated. Behind the effortlessly wearable atheistic of the ‘Eden’ bag, is a meticulous process of technique and skill. The designer handbag may gain ‘IT bag’ prestige from street style showings and trend reports, but it becomes a noteworthy classic due to the finer details that are harder to spot on the runway. Here, Givenchy unveil the secret specifics that form the ‘Eden’ bag, from the fine leather-working to the creative cut and the hand-made stitching:

Firstly, all the different parts of the bag are cut by hand or thanks to a specific mold, pressed on the skin. The leather pieces are then split to obtain equal thickness, which enables the creation of fine edges and junctions. The edges of all pieces are first polished with a rolling brush to remove the rough parts, then hand-painted. All the pieces are dried in a slow oven and this operation is repeated at least 3 times on each panel. Then, the recognizable V-shaped stitches are delicately hand-made on the flap and the body of the bag, before the golden foil Givenchy Paris signature is printed on the flap.

The form of the bag was inspired by the winter of Eden – the theme at the center of the FW19 collection – it evokes a dark romance through a mysterious alchemy of bold graphics, sinuous lines, and exotic finishes. Both a classic piece of craft and a seasonal staple, the bag comes in varied range of textures and hues which include a daring pink serpent print and contrasting earthy, minimal tones. The handbag will be available in regional stores and online from August 13.
