Introducing Lady Gaga, movie star. As the pop icon prepares to head to the big screen for her awards season rock-drama, A Star Is Born, there has been a shift within her wardrobe. As she headed onto press circuit for premieres and screenings, Gaga left kitschy costumes at home, preferring to present herself in the manner of a starlet. This week at Entertainment Weekly‘s Must List Party in Toronto, she arrived in an Armani Privé column gown covered in silver discs, Gianvito Rossi heels, and diamond chandelier earrings by Abu Dhabi jeweler Amwaj to match. The ensemble—which would be full-glam on, say, Dakota Johnson or Blake Lively—made for an alluring but relatively subdued Gaga look.

Since the beginning of the film’s promo tour, Gaga and her team have chosen outfits that reflect her acting ambitions rather than the over-the top-fashion she’s best known for. The choice has made for a series of elegant looks, from a one-shouldered Victoria Beckham midi-dress for a screening earlier this week to a plush burgundy velvet Ralph and Russo draped number worn during a trip to the Toronto International Film Festival. Content to let her performance take center stage rather than the clothes, the star’s latest evolution may be her most interesting yet.
