This Dubai-Based Fashion House Takes a Creative Risk (And it Works)

Dubai-based fashion house Kristina Fidelskaya presents a Spring 2018 collection inspired by Brutalist architecture. Considered one of the more controversial movements of the early 20th century, it was a style preferred by government institutions, Western Europe, Soviets, and the Eastern Bloc–solid and strong was the motto. But the collection isn’t all raw, Ukranian Fidelskaya also pulls from the historical drama W.E about the love affair between Wallis Simpson and King Edward VXIII of England. The two lived a life of luxury and Simpson’s impeccable fashion is still hailed today. The designer unites these two polar opposite ideas with her traditional earth-toned palette to create a wardrobe for day-to-night.

Trenchcoats, skirts, dresses, trousers, and suit jackets show a focus on cut and rich fabrics that range from opaque to transparent. Waists are emphasized with on-trend loop belts as are necklines. After studying at ESMOD Dubai, and since launching her brand with a Fall 2015 collection, Fidelskaya has gently eased into a more contemporary style. In a statement-loving fashion climate, at times her collections lacked a point of view. However, Spring 2018 showcases a fine clash of the brute with the sweet, a paradox many women are familiar with and like to portray via their clothes. It also hints that the best is yet to come.
