Five Questions with Leg Wear Guru Kristina Falke

Socks and tights don’t only serve to warm up your limbs— as a matter of fact they can also give your footwear a stylish upgrade. According to the 2018 resort collections, the socks and shoe combo has re-emerged as a chic trend. Gucci combined orange socks and burgundy tights with platform heels, while Prada kept it clean and sophisticated by way of grey-hued socks paired with mary jane heels. Surely this trend needs to be considered with care, which is why we turned to the godmother of leg wear: Kristina Falke, head of global communications at the iconic leg wear brand, Falke.

First things first: Are fishnets really making a comeback?
One could only blame Hedi Slimane for that. But it can look cool if you know how to style them. I would advise everyone to never wear a fishnet with miniskirts or shorts. If you opt for a skirt, go for one that ends just a few mm above the knee. Ripped jeans could also do the trick. Fishnets are already a powerful statement, so always try to keep the rest of your outfit clean and minimal in terms of fabric and prints. The right pair of shoes are key: never opt for an open-toe shoe – instead go for boots or white plain sneakers.

Any other trends that women should keep in mind this season?
Yes, take a look at the last Chanel collection for example. See-through is making a comeback. I can already predict that we will see a lot of see-through heels with socks. Socks with logos will take the lead, but if you’re not into that, a pair with a sophisticated print would work too.

Let’s talk basics. How does one buy the right pair of tights?
Finding the right pair of tights is very easy. If you’re tall, always choose a bigger size. This goes for curvy women as well. If you’re a size 38, it doesn’t doesn’t mean you’re tights are the same size. If your tights are too tight, it minimizes the flexibility of your legs, which could leave you with holes in your hosiery. At the end, you just have to buy what works well for your body and comfort.

With the Middle East’s balmy climate, do women even want to wear tights or socks?
Absolutely, otherwise we wouldn’t have recently opened a store at Level Shoes in Dubai. Stay ups are the best option if you live in a warm country. The silicone edges of the tights will stick to your legs when it’s warm. As long as you keep in mind that when you opt for them never moisturize your legs as the silicones won’t be able to stick and the stay-up will lose its grip on your legs. Also a tight with a minimal denier would work better when it’s warm. A 10 denier for example is perfect for achieving a bare leg look and is available in a wide variety of shades to suit your skin tone. These tights will also keep your legs cool in warm weather and are ideal to wear to work or formal occasions.

What is the ultimate tip?
If you have a wedding always take an extra pair of tights with you. Thank me later!
