Keira Knightley’s Nutcracker Premiere Look is as Fabulous as You’d Hope

The London premiere of Disney’s The Nutcracker and the Four Realms took place on November 1, and, much to the delight of fans, cast members Keira Knightley and Ellie Bamber took their character parts quite literally for the red-carpet celebration.

Knightley, who plays the Sugar Plum Fairy in the dramatic spin-off of E. T. A. Hoffman’s 1816 Christmas tale, wore a frothy white Chanel Haute Couture gown with gold brocade and baby-pink sash with a bow that cascaded down her back. It was saccharine princess fashion in its most unabashed form, and provided a welcome glance back to Chanel’s Couture Spring 2005 collection.

Entitled French Garden, owing to Karl Lagerfeld’s preoccupation with flowers when creating the designs, the flora of each dress was entwined with the romance of the 18th century, which the helmsman of the house is an authority on. During a time when the industry is slowly waking up to the environmental impact of constantly creating new fashion, Knightley’s 13-year-old couture said more than a fresh-off-the-catwalk dress could perhaps have done about the symbolism of the film.

Bamber, who plays Louise, went mini for her turn in the spotlight. A strapless, belted Chanel Couture Spring 2017 dress with extravagant beading on the bodice and a full feathered skirt was nothing short of festive, and nodded to the ballet element of the franchise. Just like her co-star, Bamber undercut the powdery palette with a dark red lip and pulled her hair back from her face.

Of course, two Chanel ambassadors in archive looks are bound to turn heads, but, after a week of celebrity Halloween costumes – many of which could be seen as gratuitous self-promotion exercises – the Nutcracker premiere quite simply feted the nostalgia of a family story that has become a staple of Christmas.
