Kate Middleton made a rare appearance via Instagram this week, and the internet was quick to notice a rarely-seen band on her finger, next to a casual alternative to her engagement ring.
The Prince and Princess of Wales recently featured in a special video with Snoop Dogg, David Beckham, and more congratulating Team Great Britain for its achievements at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Kate Middleton, who is currently taking a step back from royal duties while she undergoes preventative chemotherapy, made a rare appearance in the post, wearing a ring that holds great sentimental value. The rarely-seen piece of jewelry is reportedly a promise ring that Prince William once gifted to Kate at the start of their relationship as students at St. Andrews University. Also known as an eternity band, the ring is a Victorian-style rose gold piece, set with the couple’s birthstones: Pearls for the prince (June), and garnets for the princess (July). According to Dress Like a Duchess, Kate wore the ring to her graduation from university and has since been rarely spotted with it. The blog also states that the ring and its stones represent “commitment and fidelity as well as a pledge for lifelong love and loyalty.”

Kate, Princess of Wales’ rings are some of the most talked-about possessions in the royal’s jewelry collection, mainly because of her iconic engagement ring. Featuring a large sapphire surrounded by white diamonds, the ring once belonged to Prince Williams’s late mother, Princess Diana. In the new video, Kate is stacking the eternity band with a casual alternative to the storied piece, featuring the same stones on a gold band. The low-key piece contributed to the at-home feel of the royals’ video, for which the princess wore a white and navy blue striped top, and the prince sported a Team GB polo and a scruff that is also the talk of the internet.
Since announcing that she had been diagnosed with cancer, Kate has taken a big step back from the public eye, and was only recently seen at Wimbledon last month. The appearance was preceded by a deeply personal statement by the princess herself, who reflected on her health journey so far, sharing that she is “not out of the woods yet.” She added, “I am learning how to be patient, especially with uncertainty. Taking each day as it comes, listening to my body, and allowing myself to take this much-needed time to heal.”
