Post Her 40th Birthday, Kate Middleton Returned to Work, and Re-Wore This Blue Winter Coat

January blues don’t seem to exist in the Cambridge household, and why should they? After the roaring success of Kate Middleton’s 40th birthday portraits, which showed a new style direction for the royal, the Duchess is back to work with a smile that suggests she had a lovely birthday, thank you very much.

Visiting London’s Foundling Museum, of which Middleton is patron, she and the Duke of Cambridge learnt about the wider landscape of care in the UK, from mental health to housing. A cause close to Kate’s heart, thanks to her commitment to understanding the formative experiences of early childhood, she delivered her usual polished professionalism, but radiated the warmth that makes her a confident figurehead in the sector.

Kate Middleton has nailed the classic workwear uniform

Winter workwear for Kate Middleton nowadays looks like this: an immaculate classic coat in a shade slightly more cheering than the navy and black palettes the rest of us gravitate to, high-waisted, wide-leg trousers (always belted), a simple polo-neck, point-toe pumps and a pair of characterful drop earrings. Today’s formula leaned heavily on the high street for her failsafe outfit formula. Jewelry came via Accessorize, rather than the royal family’s collection, and her separates included a modest buy from Jigsaw.

Of course it wouldn’t be a modern-day Duchess look without some recycling thrown in the mix. Kate Middleton last wore her blue outerwear in January 2020, according to royal style hawks, but it still looks as pristine today. Her quiet mission to show that quality fashion – whether from the high street or high end – does not have a shelf life. 2022 already looks good on Kate.
